A tribute to Rachael Jorstad

Rachael’s major accomplishments

  • Investing a lot into the culture of our summer staff.

  • Continuing to improve the registration and preparation process for our volunteers in a way that centers the dignity of our community

  • Being part of a team that creates thoughtful and relevant yearly themes and worships

  • Helping Mountain T.O.P. become more outcomes-focused and building program assessment into our practices and culture

Favorite thing about being on full-time staff

I’ve learned in working for Mountain T.O.P. that ministry means doing a little bit of everything. I can’t imagine there are too many jobs that offer the same breadth of responsibilities and opportunities as a position at Mountain T.O.P. offers. Some days were mundane and looked the same in the office. Some days I would find myself on a homeowner’s roof or in the kitchen preparing meals for volunteers. Other days I would be at a school cafeteria talking to Day Camp participants or in the hospital with a staff person. Some days I would be traveling to talk to a church or staging funny photos for a social media campaign. And with the diversity of tasks comes the wonderful vastness of the Mountain T.O.P. community. The people make all the difference!

Rachael is most excited about…

A few years ago, in a one-on-one meeting with Julie, she mentioned that she thought that I would enjoy getting some kind of theological training or degree. At the time, I didn’t really know what to do with that idea but eventually that seed sprouted into the journey I’m on now. Working at Mountain T.O.P. gave me a lot of experience in planning and leading worships, hosting small and large group conversations, and creating the space for people to pay attention to how God is working in and around them. Those experiences motivated me to want to pursue a Masters of Theological Studies and be vocationally-focused on spiritual formation and I’m excited about where this journey will take me.

What Rachael will miss most about Mountain T.O.P.

  • Long conversations with Julie,

  • Having co-workers that feel like family

  • Living in Grundy County, especially being a mile from the Fiery Gizzard park!
